Breathe nature, savor tradition, and rediscover the essence of true well-being in a place where every detail tells the story and beauty of the Dolomites.

The palace that today hosts Hotel Orso Grigio boasts noble origins and a centuries-old history. Between the 13th and 15th centuries, it was subject to Tyrolean jurisdiction, later passing to the Lords of Egna and then to the Firmian family. At the end of the 15th century, it became the property of Judge Domenico Zen, before being purchased by the Cazzano family, wool merchants. In the 16th century, it passed to the Giovanelli family, a dynasty of notaries who resided there until the 18th century. Sold in 1762 to Dr. Alessandro Riccabona, it remained in the family until 1812. In the 19th century, it was transformed into the “Antico Albergo Reale”, famous for its hay baths and grape care, even hosting Emperor Franz Joseph of Habsburg. Acquired in 1973 by Alfredo Vanzo, after various restorations, it became the current Hotel Orso Grigio, an elegant four-star hotel.
Since 1973, the hotel has undergone several restorations, always respecting the original structure. In March 2015, a major renovation of the interiors began, transforming the hotel into a modern and comfortable four-star biohotel. The work, completed in time for the 2015-2016 winter season, led to the creation of four new floors with 18 spacious and bright rooms, overlooking the historic center of Cavalese and the Dolomites. The original frescoes on the main facade were also restored, revealing the Cazzano family coat of arms, and the exterior finishes were renewed in Renaissance style.
During the modernization work, high-quality eco-compatible materials were used, such as raw clay for thermoregulation and white and red fir wood from the Val di Fiemme. To ensure comfort, thermal and acoustic insulation, local wood fiber panels were used, superior to traditional materials and in line with sustainability principles. This approach allowed the hotel to obtain Class A energy certification.
Each room has a unique layout. Ancient walls, centuries old, stand as a testament to a long-lost way of building.
During the renovation of our hotel, the architect and builder chose to enhance the sense of solidity that defines this house. The materials used are among the finest in eco-sustainable construction: raw clay walls provide natural temperature regulation, breathability, and air filtration — allowing the pure Alpine air to circulate without heat loss, while maintaining ideal humidity levels. The white and red fir wood comes directly from the forests of Val di Fiemme.
We are the current custodians of these ancient walls that still have many stories to tell.
We preserved everything we could. That’s what makes this hotel so unique.
